Josephine’s life took a dramatic turn after a head-on car accident left her with four herniated discs in her back. Like many, she initially hoped time would heal the pain, but it only grew worse. After consulting multiple professionals, one suggested spinal fusion as the only solution.
At a crossroads between surgery and something different, Jo turned to a friend for advice. The suggestion? Yoga. At first, Jo couldn’t imagine how something she’d always associated with ‘hippies’ and ‘tambourine players’ could help her—yet desperate for relief, she decided to give it a try.
The journey wasn’t easy. The physical pain was debilitating, and emotionally, Jo was consumed with fear and despair. The thought of living a life confined to a wheelchair loomed large. It was a pivotal moment—spinal fusion or something entirely new. Yoga became the turning point, and little did Jo know, it would spark a life-changing transformation.
"Getting onto the floor during my first class felt impossible,” Jo recalls. “I needed help just to get into position. But as the weeks went by, something shifted. I slept through the night for the first time in a long time. That was the first sign that things were changing. As I continued, I began to feel more at peace—physically and mentally. The practice stopped feeling intimidating. That’s when I understood the power of breath, and how it all worked together—body, mind, and spirit—for real healing.”
The benefits kept coming. With each passing class, Jo’s body grew stronger, and her mind clearer. Pain that once dominated her life started to fade, replaced by a deep sense of balance and well-being.
Six years after her first class, Jo took the next step in her journey. She enrolled in yoga teacher training, studying Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Trauma-Informed Yoga, Meditation, Philosophy, Somatics, and Psychosomatic Therapy. The learning has never stopped.
Today, Jo is a sought-after teacher with a unique approach: she focuses not just on the body, but on the mind and emotions. Her practice helps people heal from physical injuries, address mental health challenges, and restore spiritual balance.
Jo now travels across Australia and New Zealand, teaching her Healthy Hips and Lower Back – A Therapeutic Yoga Workshop. From yoga studios to community halls and small towns, her workshops are filled with people eager to discover the transformative power of yoga. Her life is a testament to healing, not just for her, but for the countless people whose lives have been changed by her teachings.

The Australian Yoga Ball
June 23, 2018
The Australian Yoga Ball was the brainchild of Josephine Doyle, an annual fundraising event held at the Sofitel at Darling Harbour, in celebration of the exceptional contribution the yoga community makes in Australian society. Money from ticket sales, donations and sponsorship went to support women and children who affected by Domestic Violence and living in shelters. These funds gave 20 women and children the opportunity to attend a fully funded 3-day yoga retreat. This event, run by the charity Through the Heart of Yoga, aims to offer hope, peace and healing to survivors of domestic violence through yoga.
